final installment: the fish song
there were several original compositions on these recordings, but this was the song i always returned to. they say “write what you know,” and clearly, i knew animals…and that josh was taking a bath.
***though not captured in this clip, i was very frustrated that my mom didn’t know the guitar part to my masterpiece.

third installment: to love a care bear
this song doesn’t go much of anywhere, but it expresses my sentiment clearly.
frankly i’m surprised that it survived. josh and i weren’t allowed to watch the show due to its “new age” agenda.
other shows on the black list: my little pony, the smurfs, scooby doo, ninja turtles
*josh is pictured above with his jesus teddy bear.
**tim would like noted the bob dylan influences on my three year old vocals.
***we had really great parents who loved us lots. they just had some funny ideas.

second installment: three year old theology
this original song makes clear that my early understanding was heretical at best, but at least i knew who to ask.
the gem comes at the end of this clip when josh commandeers the mic. he can’t say much, but he’s heard the phrase “no, josh” so often that he automatically repeats it.
***i understand that this may only be interesting to my family. i promise, i’ll be done by friday.

my mom was digging through some old boxes and came across a tape that she’d recorded of my brother and i, with the intention of sending it to my grandparents, who were living in south africa. we were about one and three, respectively, and rather full of energy.
today marks the beginning of a four-part series delving into the mind of three year old hope longwell.
first installment: jesus songs
***it should be noted that at the beginning of this recording, my mother included a disclaimer that i was just getting over a cold, otherwise, i’d sound “much more beautiful.” come on, mom! i was only three!
